      Shots for Tots

RN Becca Miles has been heading up Shots
for Tots for about two years.  She was
accompanied by Meredith Kersten,
Carissa Peterson, and Lisa DeVries.
In 2003-4 Colorado ranked 50th in
the country for children with required immunizations
As of 2015, Colorado now ranks 25th
among the states for children with the
required shots.
A number of questions were asked as
to why Colorado ranked so low.  Becca
said that some mothers were concerned
about Autism being caused by the
vaccines.  Becca said "This is not true".
Some doctor had started this false rumor
because he was promoting a vaccine he was
selling.  He is in jail now.
Craig Wagner, the chair of Shots For Tots
for the last 12 years recalled that this
started out as  a reading program out
of  RM Clinic in Hoffman Heights.  Children
coming to the clinic could take their pick
of children's books which were arraigned
around the room.  At that time, it was called
Live and Learn.  Live being the immunization
and learn being the books.
There was a discussion about holding it at
Fire Station #2.  Becca said that it was
the center of children that were under
immunized.
She said the staff was very grateful for the
lunch we furnished for them on "Shots"
day.  Currently, a video of the shots
program is in production.
Shots for Tots and teens are held
at Aurora Fire Station #2
Colorado Miners Community Center
and  Arvada Fire Station #2.
