Arapahoe County Sheriff
David Walcher
Arapahoe County Sheriff Dave Walcher noted that
sheriff is an elected position. He is a Rotarian in the Centennial Rotary Club. He has been sheriff for seven years. He thinks it is the most difficult job in law enforcement.
The Sheriff's department has responsibility for
providing service to all the unincorporated areas
in Arapahoe County but is also empowered in the
urban areas as needed. They work together very
closely with the Aurora Police Department.
The Sheriffs Department is organized into two
bureaus, Public Safety which includes patrol and
investigation and administration of the jail.
40% of the budget is for Public Safety and 60%
is allocated to the administration of the jail.
At any time, there are 1000 inmates in the jail.
They book in 18,000 inmates a year.
Many of the inmates are in pre-trial holding
waiting for their sentencing. At that time, they
will be transferred to the state department of
corrections.
15% of the offenders are in for DUI.
16% are women.
The total budget for the sheriff's is $90 million.
They are able to stretch the budget by using
inmates in food preparation and laundry. They
are given "good time" for this service.
The sheriff's office has a bomb squad that is on
call as needed.
