  Colorado Freedom Memorial

Rick Crandall of KEZW radio told the story of
developing The Colorado Freedom Memorial.
He spent 13 years trying to raise the $800,000
that was needed to build it.
He was about to give up.  He was doing a radio-thon
trying to raise the money.  Someone called
and Rick's wife answered the phone.  The caller
asked how much was still needed.  She
told him $320,000.  He said he'd call her back
in 20 minutes.  He did and said, "the check is in
the mail".  And it was.
Read below to find out about the memorial.

  • The Colorado Freedom Memorial is made of glass and stands 12 feet tall and 95 feet long. It's base is tiled in granite.
  • The panels of glass that make up the memorial lean forward and back, representative of men falling in action. A trough of water runs in front of the memorial, representative of the oceans that separate Colorado from the fields of battle.
  • Nearly 6000 names appear on the wall. They are grouped by war, but names will not be alphabetically listed. This will allow for additions as they are discovered.
  • A section of the wall stands back from the main wall. This section contains the names of Colorado's MIAs.
  • A four-acre park surrounds the memorial, allowing for private and public ceremonies in honor of those lost in war.
  • This is the first memorial in America dedicated to ALL wars, ALL branches of service and containing names of all who died in those wars.
  • Faith Hinkley of Monte Vista is the only uniformed female listed on the wall.

From the www.cfm.net web site:

"Time will not dim the glory of their deeds."
— General of the Armies, John J. Pershing

But time does dim the memory of the men and women who gave their lives defending freedom. That's why the Colorado Freedom Memorial is so important. It insures future generations will know the price paid for their freedom and it gives families and comrades of the fallen the knowledge we have not forgotten!

On its glass panels are the names of nearly 6000 killed in action since we became a state. These heroes left the mountains of home to fight in places they'd never heard of, answering their nations call to duty. The Colorado Freedom Memorial is located in Aurora, Colorado, near Buckley Air Force Base.

Almost half of the men and women honored on the Memorial never returned home, their remains lost at sea, never recovered behind enemy lines, or buried in far away places. For families that never had a cemetery to visit, the Colorado Freedom Memorial becomes a place of grief and of healing.

In the one year since this monument was dedicated, thousands have come to visit, to shed tears, to reminisce, to pay tribute, to just sit and remember. Ceremonies have been held here, motorcycle rides have stopped here, Memorial services have been held here and respect has been paid here. The Colorado Freedom Memorial touches each visitor in a special way.
