In case you missed it, Ex-President Don Massey announced last week that he is stepping down as President of the Aurora Rotary Club effective immediately.  Don and his family left last Sunday, all packed up and headed to Houston.  Don is sorry to have to step down so early in his term, but felt like this was the best thing for his family. The members would like to thank Don for his service to the club and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.
Our new President for the remainder of this year, President Phil Gibson did a stellar job during his first official meeting. Thank you Phil for agreeing to move your term up almost a full year.
Linda Witulski reminds us about the Book Box project currently under way by the Rangeview HS Interact Club. We are currently accepting book donations to help fill the boxes. Bring books for all ages to the meeting for donations. The official book drive is scheduled for Rangeview High School on Saturday October 10, 11am-1pm.
Members Rick Richard and President-Elect Danielle Lammon announced the annual Elimination of Polio Drive.  Due to the efforts of Rotary and the Bill Gates Foundation Polio is now down to one strain and only existing in two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.  The Gates foundation will match donations 2 to 1 with a $50M goal. There's still time to get your forms from Rick or Danielle and support this effort to rid the world of Polio.
President-Elect Danielle Lammon also announced Aurora's Day of Giving. The City of Aurora’s Community Relations Division, along with various local nonprofit organizations, has launched the Commitment to Care Initiative. Seven food access programs make up the initiative and aim to provide food and resources to those in need, to include children, families, seniors, immigrants and refugees, and victims of crime. The “Aurora Day of Giving“ is the flagship event and extends the weekly mobile food pantry that ran May – August and provided more than 470,000 meals to community members.
YOUR help is needed, and Danielle Lammon has stepped up to promote and coordinate our Club’s support in helping provide volunteers for the City’s food giveaway event on Oct. 24th.
1) They will have food to distribute for 1,500 families (along with baby supplies & pet food), so we need to turn out as many people as possible to ensure all this food gets into the community.
2) Approximately 70 volunteers are needed for each Aurora Day of Giving event, of which we hope to provide at least 20 or so on Oct. 24.  Volunteers assist with traffic control, food distribution, and general event support as needed.
3) Kim Armitage will be sending out a Signup Genius to help keep track of WHO is volunteering so we can tell the City. This also makes it easier to send you info especially for the volunteers.
4) We have learned that volunteers must be at least 18.  You can expect to be onsite from 8:30 a.m. to approx. 2:30 p.m. (or until we’ve run out of food).
Please direct anyone interested in volunteering on behalf of the Aurora Club to Danielle or Patti Bateman, and we will help folks get signed up and receive additional volunteer information.
President Phil announced a major collaboration opportunity to help furnish a Veteran's home. Donna Beaman is working with her old club Denver LoDo, along with South Denver Rotary Club, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and Returning Peace Corp Volunteers to help. There is a specific list of items required for residents to move it. The home will be on the Fitzsimmons campus at Montview and Peoria, and called the Veterans Renaissance Apartments.  Here is some more details about the building:
Please see Donna for ways to help.

You’ve probably seen the following guidelines before, but they’re important and worth repeating:

⦁ Wear a cloth mask that fully covers your mouth and nose.
⦁ Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after each use of disposable gloves.
⦁ When returning home take off shoes and clothing leaving them by the door.
⦁ Wash your face and hands before touching anything in your home after going outside.

Guest Speaker, Bill Morris
Bill joined us by Zoom and offered some great information about a day program that hires employees with a focus on Abilities. Blue Star Recyclers offers meaningful, asset-based work for people with disabilities. With zero absenteeism and less than 10% turnover, these folks disassemble electronics of all kinds. Since beginning is 2009, 50 people have worked to recycled 23 million pounds of e-waste and saved 30 million pounds of green house gasses from entering the atmosphere.
Blue Star Recyclers has locations in Colorado Springs, Denver, Boulder, Basalt and Buffalo Grove, IL. Bill is working with his guest Marti to open an Aurora/Gateway satellite drop-off location near public transportation. This will increase recycling in SE Denver and repurpose reusable computers into low-income neighborhoods.
All donated hard drives are wiped clean in keeping with their
certification. They have plenty of capacity should the Rotary Club of Aurora conduct an e-waste drive.
They do not take items that contain freon such as refrigerators and air conditioning units. They also do not accept smoke detectors or anything that contains any type of fluid. For more information click the link below.
We'd like to thank Bill for his time and valuable information!
