Mike Dworak, Development Director with SECOR Cares, shared about their organization. This is a powerful organization that is attempting to meet the needs of our community. SECOR Cares' vision is to grow a team of committed volunteers and employees implementing their services to 5,000 of the 45,000 families in need in our 42 zip codes, while collaborating with other like-minded organizations as well as planting the SECOR model in 5 plus additional locations.
For the first time in history, 3 out of 4 public elementary school teachers say they see students regularly come to school hungry, and experience anxiety when it’s time to go home on the weekend or over vacations because they are not sure if they will get to eat. Poverty has migrated to suburbs. There are 37,000 in Douglas, Arapahoe,
and Elbert counties that are at risk of going hungry each and every day.
SECOR Cares operates a food bank, available to those who qualify. Poverty is usually a surprise due to loss of job, accident, or illness. People using the food bank are surprised that it’s like a regular grocery store with fresh food, produce, and meat. Many kids get breakfast and lunch at school but nothing for the weekend. Due to this many children stuff their back packs so they have something for the weekend. This is where SECOR Cares tries to make an impact. SECOR also has developed a food bank on a semi they take to people who are unable to get around.
SECOR wants to develop a level of self-sufficiency by doing the following:
- Fresh Food Market
- Financial coaching
- Financial aid
- Counseling
- Free Dental
- Legal aid
- Medical clinics
- Job help.
